Marty Wilkinson Memorial

On a cold Christmas Day, seven people arrived at K-Mart parking lot. All were there to catch a darling black and white with brown fox terrier puppy who was fast and ever so swift. Marty (named for the store!) was accustomed to grabbing food and running off somewhere to eat. Marty was not caught Christmas Day 1996, but seven strangers became friends – Marty would now have a home when caught.

Marty came to live with us on January 14, 1997. Spencer had a heart attack December 26, 1966, and before and after Spencer’s by-pass surgery in Tallahassee, Marty was his main concern. Debbie Howard finally captured the elusive Marty and Eunice Knight kept him until Marty became a member of the Wilkinsons.

Our fence is almost cemented on the west side – Marty did not want to be confined. Equally my doll collection, pillows, etc. became his chosen targets of destruction when he was "Home Alone". Charter House tidbits became a tool for training – good dog – great snack! Marty had to learn to love car riding. Soon bill-paying day was a special highlight as First Community Bank, First Port City Bank and the Water Department gave out dog cookies.

On Sunday, Marty got to visit the boat basin. He looked forward to seeing the goats, donkeys, and even the emus. Lots of children at the trains fascinated, sometimes frightened, Marty (on the K-Mart parking lot children sometimes chased him).

Parties were a particular favorite. Marty could find the perfect person and become a supreme beggar. He stayed under tables to avoid being stepped on! He loved Christmas – opening packages had to be learned – but Marty delighted in the celebration.

Marty, we miss you every day, every hour. You were the perfect dog in our lives. You gave so much and asked so very little. May God be enjoying your talents now and may you wait for us. Love always to Marty – a very special dog!
